(asking his Dad about the cannibals) "We would never eat anybody, would we? No matter how hungry we were? Even if we were starving?"

(after he kills a man, his son asks, "Are we the good guys?") "Yes we're still the good guys. Of course we are. Always will be."

(trying to explain to his son the facts of their situation) "Watch out for the bad guys. Carry the fire. ("What fire?") The fire inside you."

(telling his son what happened to his mom) "She was gone, and the coldness was her final gift. She died somewhere out in the dark. There's no other tale to tell."

(thinking to himself about his son) "He imagines how things will be at the coast. If there will be other children there. He asks me what happened to my friends. I tell him that they died and that I miss them. When I have nothing else, I try to dream the dreams of a child's imaginings."
