At the Movies with Fatwayne

Jim Carrey stars as the Yes Man (Carl Allen).  If you think of all the past movies in which you have seen Carrey and had a favorable impression of him, you will in all likelihood enjoy this one. He comes through once again with all of his mugging and goofiness and generates the laughs that keep us coming back.

Carl Allen is in a rut and he is a man who does not want to do anything with anyone.  It has already cost him his girlfriend and threatens to hinder his success at work and perhaps even the friendship of his buddies. A chance meeting with an old acquaintance introduces him to a seminar where he is exposed to a cultish group led by Terrence Bundley (Terrence Stamp). His philosophy is that the word “yes” opens all possibilities in life while the other word “no” is to be avoided. Carl fully buys into this concept and starts to say yes to everyone and everything. Indeed, his life starts to change for the better with some very amusing incidents including his meeting of Allison (Zooey Deschanel).  As with all of us, a little rain must fall into our lives and our friend Carl’s life is no different.  This is, of course, a comedy and almost all comedies conclude happily.  I am pleased to report that this is precisely the case here!

There are a number of noteworthy sight gags but I must admit that my favorite involves a Ducati motorcycle and Carl.  The stunt driver was excellent doing wheelies and front wheel braking making it look like Carl was completely out of control.  What made it so funny was the fact that he was wearing one of those hospital gowns where one’s rear end is exposed most of the time.  We had a situation in which Carl could have a major “crack up” at the same time his “crack” was up (if you catch my meaning)!

I like to laugh when I go to see a comedy. I got my share of chuckles and guffaws this time out. If you go to see this movie and are a Jim Carrey fan, let me know what you think.
