Tooth Fairy

Dwayne Johnson certainly seems to have found his niche in the light but humorous movie genre. I, for one, am glad that he did. The Tooth Fairy depicts the actor as likable despite his flaws and showcases his comedic talents and the total lack of ego as he dons the most ridiculous of costumes.

This time out Johnson plays a minor league hockey puck (Derek Thompson) nicknamed The Tooth Fairy because of his propensity to knock out the teeth of opposing players. He is a man that has lost his spirit and cannot ponder “what if.”  He is a realist who is quite willing to ruin the dreams of the kids who idolize him. He does this by telling them that the odds of achieving their dreams are stacked heavily against them. He is lucky enough to be dating Carly (Ashley Judd) who comes with two kids attached. Randy is her teenage son who dreams of becoming a guitar playing rock star. Tess is the six-year-old daughter who has just lost her tooth.

Derek makes the mistake of telling Tess that there is no such thing as the “Tooth Fairy” and that she should not expect to find a dollar tucked under her pillow. That night while he is asleep he suddenly awakens sensing that something is amiss. He wakes up to find himself sprouting fairy wings and notices a summons commanding him to appear before the head fairy, Lily (Julie Andrews). She dresses him down as being a dream crusher because of what he did to Tess. She then sentences him to two weeks as a tooth fairy.

He is outfitted with his tutu, tights and slippers! What a sight he is with his bulging muscles and embarrassed expression. He then meets his handler, Tracy (Stephen Merchant) who tries to explain what is expected of him. Before Derek can handle his first assignment he must meet the wacky Jerry (Billy Crystal). Jerry is sort of like James Bond’s ”M.” He introduces Derek to such magical items as shrinking paste, invisible spray, amnesia dust, cat away and mints that make people bark like dogs.

Derek visits several children in his new role but blotches everything up causing Lily to condemn him as the worst tooth fairy ever! One of his assignments is to retrieve Tess’ tooth. While he is in her room attempting to get the tooth, Tess wakes up and Derek confesses to her that he is the tooth fairy. Seeing the happiness this brings to the child he decides that his assignment may not be so awful after all because of joy he can bring to people’s lives.

This is a story of a skeptical man whose life experiences have taught him to not dare to dream. As a result of his experiences as a tooth fairy, he turns his life around as well as the lives of those around him. This is also a feel-good movie that delivers on the chuckles and sight gags. Hey, I like Dwayne Johnson and I like his movies!
