The Unborn

This is a supernatural thriller about a young woman who is being stalked by a dybbuk. I had to look it up since this was a new one for me. A dybbuk is a malicious spirit intent on possessing a body and is essentially the dislocated soul of a dead person striving to be reborn thus returning to life on Earth.

The young lady in peril is Casey Beldon (Odette Yustman) who learns that she is the surviving twin whose brother died prior to birth.  So now it seems that our dybbuk has decided that it is time for him to be born since he planned on making his debut with Casey. Now for the really weird part.

During the course of the movie Casey meets her grandmother who she did not know existed.  Granny tells her about her days in a Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz, and the evil experiments the doctors perpetrated on twins.  It seems that she had a twin brother who was killed during one of these experiments but was brought back to life by a dybbuk who was using him as a portal into the world of the living.  Realizing this, Grandma Sofi kills her possessed brother in order to stop the evil spirit.  As you might expect, this did not sit well with our “baddie” and so he is out to take his revenge on the family and their descendant’s.

Having arrived at this sad state of affairs Casey decides that her best course of action would be to have an exorcism. Not just any exorcism but a Jewish ceremony given that this is apparently a Jewish spirit!

Okay, as usual, I am not going to be a spoiler here and so if you want to find out how Casey makes out you will just have to waste 90 minutes of your life like I did.  The movie was not a total loss as there were some clever effects like the dog with the upside down human head. You can expect the usual loud noises and sudden scene changes designed to startle you but it is nothing you haven’t seen before.

If you must see this film, I would suggest you watch it on cable or Netflix because it is just not worth the drive and price of admission. Consider yourself warned and by all means try to avoid those dybbuks.
