The Losers

I felt like a loser after seeing this film. The trouble was that it felt more like a TV movie than a feature motion picture. It was supposed to be a humorous, “doesn’t take itself seriously” production. I just found that the humor was not very prevalent and the whole script was a mess.

We have a Special Forces team who is sent to Bolivia to disrupt a drug cartel. These well-trained and supposedly cold-hearted killers alter their mission in order to save a busload of children from certain death. They successfully rescue the kids and when told by their extraction helicopter pilot that they can not all fit into the aircraft. The Team elects to let the children go on without them. As the chopper takes off our guys feel pretty good about themselves until they see the aircraft explode killing all aboard. It is then that they figure out that they were the intended targets and they vow revenge for the death of the children and their attempted assassination.

One confusing point in this movie is the character named Max (Jason Patric). He is the villain but exactly who does he work for and why does he have sway over the Special Forces unit? One thing for sure, he has amazing assets and material. He’s like a one-man government replete with a very well furnished army. His goal is to involve the world in a high tech global war for reasons known only to him. His secret weapon is a device called a sonic dematerializer or “snuke.” It makes things like islands and cities disappear. Yep, Max is a big boy with a big toy!

The movie is all about the Team’s attempt to eliminate Max and thus get their revenge and in the process save the world. The Team consists of Clay (Jeffery Dean Martin), his right hand man Rogue (Idris Elba), tech whiz Jensen (Chris Edwards), driver Pooch (Columbus Short) and sharpshooter Cougar (Oscar Jaenada). They are collectively known as The Losers. They are later joined by a mysterious woman named Aisha al-Fadhil (Zoe Saldana) whose real motives are vague but she also wants to see Max dead.

There is action galore and all types of weapons on display here. If this is enough for you, then go ahead and give it a try. Just remember that I warned you!
