The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard

I guess you could call this a modern day version of  “The Magnificent Seven”. A car dealer, Ben Selleck played by James Brolin, in Temecula, Ca. is desperate to keep his business alive. He decides to go for one all out sales event that, if successful, could result in his business staying afloat. He hires a famous team of “car mercenaries” to work their magic and sell over 200 cars over the Fourth of July weekend. This motley crew is led by a fast talking, in your face, I”ll do anything for a sale, super seller named Don “The Goods” Ready (Jeremy Piven). He brings his crew to Temecula to work alongside Ben’s loser sales force.

Things start to go as expected with cars litterly flying off the lot but Don falls for the charms of his boss’s daughter, Ivy (Jordana Spiro). She isn’t all that impressed with his formidable reputation which presents a problem for Don who wants to impress her. Don is fast approaching a burn out and starts to realize that Ivy may be his last chance at true love. Don “The Goods” Ready really has his work cut out for him if he is to sell all of the cars on the lot and win Ivy’s affections.

Also appearing are Ving Rhames, David Koechner, Alan Thicke and Charles Napier. Napier plays an over the top whacko named Dick Lewiston who gets his fair share of laughs. It is an appealing cast who do a good job of creating general mayhem on the car lot! It isn’t that original and there is nothing new to offer us but it is a rather pleasent little movie.
