The Final Destination

This is the latest offering from the “I cheated death, ha, ha,” people. The main thing that makes this installment different is the fact that it is being offered in 3D (where available). What a difference this makes and, if it is possible for you to see it in this format, by all means do so! Naturally there is an abundant amount of gore coming off the screen and seemingly splattering the audience. I felt like I should have worn a raincoat to this movie for protection! Speaking of 3D, there is one particular effect that was mesmerizing. A glowing ember leaves the screen and ever so slowly floats out over the audience only to slowly return to said screen and ignite a supply of flammable liquids. It was quite a sight!

As far as the plot is concerned, it pretty much follows the path the previous films have taken. I must admit that I was fascinated by the writer’s imagination and ability to create coincidences that result in mayhem and chaos. The audience watches as a simple action causes a reaction and then another reaction until the ultimate fate befalls the unfortunate individual.

This movie has four friends attending a car race at a nearby track. Nick O’Bannon (Bobby Campo) is enjoying the race when he suddenly has a chilling premonition. He realizes that he and his friends are in mortal danger and must leave the track immediately. This action saves their lives as well as several other people who become involved in his sudden departure from the race. As in the other movies, they are relieved to have cheated death until they come to the realization that others are dying in the same sequence that they would have originally perished had they not left the race. Nick and his girlfriend Lori Milligan (Shantel VanSanten) think that they can cheat death if they can interrupt the sequence of deaths by saving one of the group of survivors. This sounds like a good plan but it proves to be a daunting accomplishment since death always demands it’s “propers”.

The balance of the story has Nick and Lori trying to figure out what is going to happen and when so that they can thwart death’s plans. Will our friends be successful and enjoy a long and fruitful life or will they follow the path of those who came before them in this series? What do you think?!
