The Boondock Saints 11: All Saints Day
I am sorry that I missed the original Boondock Saints (1999) after seeing this sequel. I will take care of that problem right away with Netflix. This is a very entertaining film that is filled with humor and an ample amount of extreme violence and gore. Despite the gory aspect, I found the characters to be amusing while at the same time quite capable of causing an awful lot of mayhem.
The story picks up with the MacManus brothers (Connor and Murphy) and their father Noah (Billy Connolly) hiding out on a farm in Ireland. You see, they are vigilantes who were forced to flee the United States and seek refuge in the Irish countryside after executing a mob boss in a most public and spectacular fashion. They learn that a well known priest has been killed and the crime designed to make people think that the brothers have returned after eight years of laying low. None of this sits well with Connor and Murphy and so they return to set things straight. There are several twist that complicate their plan for revenge involving the Mob, the FBI and the local cops as well as a mysterious “little man” who is actually perpetrating the murders at the behest of an upper level criminal.
If you saw the original movie you will have a couple of issues cleared up with this sequel. You will learn about Noah’s childhood and how he came to be a vigilante and the truth about Paul Smecker’s death (Willem Dafoe). Don’t worry, you won’t be lost just as I wasn’t if you missed the first movie.
What made this film special for me was the abundance of characters who set the stage for a continuous stream of laughs. There is a Mexican called Romeo who befriends the brothers and who is as deadly as he is funny! Then there is a low level hit man named Gorgeous George (Bob Rubin) who should be in “stand up” with all of his shenanigans! Especially enjoyable was Julie Benz playing FBI Special Agent Eunice Bloom. She can cuss, shoot, fight and drink with the best of them all the while oozing southern charm that just won’t quit. She also has no trouble letting the guys know that she is much smarter than all of them put together! Judd Nelson and Peter Fonda are also featured but you really have to have a sharp eye to see beneath all of the makeup.
This movie makes my “A” list for action and adventure as well as a bellyful of chuckles! If you are squeamish you might want to avoid this one. Otherwise, go and have a ball!
