Terminator Salvation
You have just got to love the Terminator movies! Even though they seem to offer “more of the same” they are all entertaining and action packed. This one is no different and if you have enjoyed the preceding movies you should have fun here also.
Did I mention action? This movie is jam packed with all sorts of new machines like motorcycles, human harvesters and creepy things that live in the water! How about Skynet’s newest creation, a terminator with a human heart and outer appearance who truly believes he is human. What do you think, can we really beat these crafty machines? The members of the resistance seem to think they can! As besieged as our human friends are they still manage to have an air force, submarine and field hospitals despite the efforts and sophistication of the machines who are intent on destroying them. I thought this was a bit far fetched but I was willing to skip over these stretches of logic. I did have a very hard time accepting a heart transplant operation in a field hospital, you know, a canvas awning open at the sides in the middle of a field! Not too sanitary is it?
Despite these failures, I did enjoy the film. The new machines and the action more than made up for the plot blunders. As far as the story goes, there isn’t much difference from the earlier versions.
This time around, John Connor (Christian Bale) is the real head of the resistance in 2018. He is confronted by a stranger who isn’t what he seems to be. In fact, although he believes he is human, he is not! He is a new breed terminator/infiltrator with a human heart and appearance that rends him identical to other humans. He has a chip implanted in his brain that allows Skynet to monitor him and eventually lead them to Connor. The hybrid, Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington) is torn between his human emotions and his hatred of Skynet. He is in a real “pickle” since the resistance does not trust him and Skynet wants him to betray his human companions.
Can he and Connor team up to rescue Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin) who is critical to the survival of the human race. Kyle has been captured by the machines but we know from past movies that he is destined to go back in time to become John Connor’s father.
I thought that I was seeing things when Connor and Reese were in a fight for their lives with the terminators. All of a sudden here comes a terminator who looks just like the original. You guessed it, Arnold S. in his prime. I did a double take because there wasn’t a wrinkle or slab of fat to be seen thanks to computer effects! It was a great treat for the audience.
Look for at least one more Terminator movie down the road. It still has enough appeal to keep people buying tickets. I know that I will be in that number!
