Surrogates
I am a Bruce Willis fan and he has never disappointed me, never! As far as I am concerned, he still has a perfect record with me. In much of the movie we see his surrogate with a toupee and ultra smooth skin. This is rather disconcerting and I liked it better when he came out as he really is (yeah, I know, they always have movie makeup on).
In the near future (2017) everyone has a surrogate of themselves which may or may not resemble their real looks or even sex. The humans remain in virtual isolation while they live vicariously through their duplicate selves. Everyone on the streets is good looking and buff! If one’s surrogate is damaged it does not effect the human operators thus society is virtually crime free and there is no reasosn to fear for one’s safety.
Then something unheard of occurs as two surrogates are killed outside of a club. What is even more remarkable is that their human operators also die. This could be a threat to the entire surrogate industry since human handlers are guaranteed safety regardless of what damage or injury befalls their surrogates.
FBI agent Tom Greer (Bruce Willis) is called in to investigate using his own surrogate who is a much younger version of himself. He teams up with another agent, Jennifer Peters (Radha Mitchell), or in this world, her surrogate who just happens to be “smoking hot”. The fact that she is a looker really has nothing to do with anything – I just thought I would throw that in!
There are some conclaves of humans who disdain the use of surrogates and have decided to live in their own surrogate free zones. If you are a not human you had better not venture here even if you are with the FBI. While Greer is pursuing the suspected killer he ventures into this zone and is killed by a mob of humans while the murderer, Miles Strickland (Jack Noseworthy), escapes with the deadly weapon that he used to kill the surrogates and their human controllers. The real Greer barely escapes death by disconnecting himself just prior to Strickland’s discharge of the new weapon upon his surrogate who also survived since he ducked down as the weapon was fired.
Greer is suspended for causing an uproar by going into the restricted zone and will not be allowed to obtain a replacement surrogate for the duration of his time off. This causes him to continue the investigation on his own, that is to say as he really is without his alter ego surrogate.
There is a sub plot involving Greer and his growing dissatisfaction with the world of surrogates especially where his wife in concerned. Their entire relationship is conducted via their surrogates and Greer misses the personal aspect of their marriage. His wife, Maggie (Rosamund Pike), is quite satisfied to let her young and beautiful stand in live her life for her much to husband Tom’s displeasure.
From here there are many entertaining and thought provoking plot twists involving big business, scientist, the military and a character called The Prophet (a long haired and bearded Ving Rhames). Don’t worry, I do not plan to be a spoiler and tell you how all of this sorts itself out! Suffice it to say that I was satisfied with the ending and did not feel cheated as I have been of late with the sad excuses of movies I have attended.
This film offers a good dose of Bruce Willis, lots of action, plenty of “eye candy” and a very good story. You could do a lot worse than spending and hour and a half viewing this movie!
