Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li

Oh my gosh, where to start? This story is adapted from the  video game Street Fighter. It should have stayed a video game in my opinion. The dialogue is lame and the actors deliver it in much the same fashion.

The martial arts action is well choreographed and decently presented by the cast but the trouble is there should have been more of it and less chatter. Oh, and by the way, we have martial arts masters generating energy balls from their inner selves and projecting them like lightning bolts! We also have the usual jumping straight up into the air and all of that other nonsense that we are supposed to accept as plausable.

The story line follows the exploits of Chun-Li (Kristin Kreuk) who wants to become a concert pianist. She also becomes a martial artist under the tutelage of her father, Xiang. While still a young girl her father is kidnapped by a team of henchmen who want to use his business connections for their own nefarious purposes. Chun-Li believes her father to be dead and sort of dedicates herself to fighting those responsible. Along the way she hears of a man named Gen (Robin Shou) who is a former member of the ruthless crime ring headed by a lunatic named Bison (Neal McDonough). Gen is now the leader of an opposition group called The Order of the Web. Under Gen’s guidance, Chun-Li becomes even more proficient in her fighting ability. She eventually gets her chance for revenge and possibly her chance for a sequel!

There  were few memorable moments in this film but here are a few random thoughts for you to ponder. Neal McDonough as Bison was eerie with his sparkling blue eyes and conscienceless demeanor. Gen was rather forgettable but he did have a good quote “when you fight on the side of monsters, eventually you become one”. Michael Clarke Duncan as Balrog is imposing as always with his booming voice and bulging biceps. Badass assasin Vega (Taboo) with his silver mask and ripping claw is suppose to be fearsome but he gets his ass kicked by Chun-Li with little trouble on her part!

Lastly, I leave you with two quotes. The first is from Chun-Li - “I stood up when standing was not easy and have found something to believe in, something worth fighting for – the Order of the Web.”  The second quote comes from yours truly, Fatwayne. “I sat down when sitting was not easy and I didn’t find anything to rave about, nothing worth relating -Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.”
