Star Trek: First Contact (1996)
I have been a fan of Star Trek since the days when Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock starred in the TV series. When they began making the movies I was thrilled to be able to see them on the big screen. I have seen each movie multible times and I enjoy them each time I view them.
This one features Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard and Brent Spiner as Data. These two are always fun to watch as they interact with each other. As always, Brent Spiner does a great job as the android who wants to become more human. Also enjoyable are Jonathan Frakes as Will Riker along with Marina Sirtas as Counselor Deanna Troi. And let’s not forget our favorite Klingon, Worf, played by Michael Dorn. Especially fun to watch is Alice Krige as the Borg Queen with her oh so soothing voice.
One of my favorite Star Trek villains has to be the collective known as the Borg. They are famous for their saying “resistance is futile!” Truly a quirky bunch who are content to let you wander amongst them unless you pose a threat. The Borg makeup is a treat to behold and certainly has a 24th century flair.
This time out our friends, the Borg, are up to their old trick of assimilating everything in sight. Since Picard was once himself assimilated, Starfleet Command has ordered him to stay away from the latest battle between the Borg and the Federation. Sensing that the Federation is loosing the battle, Picard decides to disobey his orders and join the fight. With his special knowledge of the Cube (Borg ship) he is able to destroy it by targeting its weak spots. Unfortunately, the Borg are able to launch a small probe and it is headed directly to Earth. For reasons I don’t question, the Enterprise enters a time warp created by the Borg and winds up on Earth in the 21st century.
This is important for Humankind because the Borg are determined to assimilate the Earth and plan to alter history before scientist Efram Cochrane (James Cromwell) can conduct man’s first faster than light flight. History records that the Vulcans on a routine mapping mission would detect the warp signature and make “first contact”.
In the interim, Picard has his hands full with the Borg who have gained access to the Enterprise and are assimilating his crew. To make matters worse, the Borg Queen has captured Data and wants to make him one of her drones.
We all are hopeful that Picard and his crew are able to fend off this latest assault. Even with all that is a stake, it sure is fun to watch! It might be time for you to give it another look.
