Push

My head hurts! I just returned from viewing the movie PUSH and this is where the headache originated. Talk about a convoluted plot and a plot with so many holes it could serve as as an implement to strain your pasta! The future is this but, wait a minute, maybe the future is that or even who knows or cares. And then we have all of these super enhanced characters who are called (take your pick)  Movers, Pushers, Shifters, Sniffers, Bleeders, etc. They all have their own power and would be pretty scary if they really existed.

Anyway, our quirky story concerns a government agency (surprised?) who is trying to create an army of these super people for their own purposes. This entity is called the Division and it has no moral problem experimenting on any likely candidate even if they are all dying after being injected with the latest drug designed to enhance their particular power. Eventually they find one woman who survives the injection but manages to escape. This “lucky” lady,  Kira Hudson (Camilla Belle)  is trying to evade the legions of agents who are after her and the vile of serum that she escaped with.

Not too messy yet?  Kira meets up with another duo who are also on the lam namely Nick Grant (Chris Evans) and Cassie Holmes (Dakota Fanning). Let’s get a little sticky here! Nick and Kira turn out to be past lovers while Cassie (who sees the future) tells them that they will all die. Now let’s add some flypaper to gum up things further! The Division task force leader, Henry Carver (Djimon Hounsou) is after our trio and so is the Chinese equivalent of the Asian X Men. It gets even stickier with all of these super powers coming into play enabling people to “see” where each other are and where they are going thus foiling their plans.

One of the quirkiest super powers on display has to be the goofballs who employ their voices to kill and/or destroy. They apparently have to remove their ever present sunglasses or risk an eye injury!

OK, enough of this already! Production values are good as is the acting and special effects. It’s too bad that the actors didn’t have a better script working for them. The running time is just under two hours and you may be well advised to bring along an aspirin or two.

A couple of parting shots, if you will allow me. A PUSH is the planting of a thought or idea into one’s mind such as “put your gun into your mouth and pull the trigger” (no lie!). Shot number two, if you enjoyed this film it appears to be ripe for a sequel judging by the ending.
