Paul
What have we here? A quirky looking, wise cracking, foul mouthed, pot smoking and rude alien trying to get back to his home planet after he learns that his human captors plan to dissect him. Although many aspects of this movie parallel ET, this alien is definitely not your Mom’s ET! Sure, he has telepathic and healing powers and finds a way to get home after 60 years in captivity (which he mistook for safety and protection) just like ET but this character is gross and has a penchant for foul words and deeds.
There is a reason that this is an “R” rated movie and I will tell you now it is not for the kiddies. Even though Paul is cute in his own way and may appeal to the younger set, you should definitely keep them home. For the adults among us it is a hoot! Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are the stars. You may remember these Brits from Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.
They play two nerdy comic book fans on tour of America in search of spots famous for extraterrestrial sightings and also to attend a Comic-Con convention. As good luck (?) would have it they stumble into the alien Paul. They decide to assist Paul in his efforts to get back to his world but that may be easier said than done. We have black operatives, crazy fathers and a sheltered daughter as well as religious zealots all conspiring to cause our heroes major problems.
Look for several familiar faces making cameo appearances. They add an extra kick to the story. This is a very funny sci fi adventure comedy that should satisfy those who appreciate this genre.
