Paul Blart: Mall Cop

Slap stick, sight gags and funny quotes always make me laugh!  I laughed a lot while viewing this movie. I didn’t care if the plot was full of holes or if Paul Blart had more lives than John McClane (Bruce Willis) in Die Hard the movie upon which this one seems to be very loosely based. This is not high brow comedy and you are not required to think but merely to experience the comedic moments and enjoy yourself!

Kevin James (King of Queens) plays Paul Blart in grand style.  He is stuck in the mall as a security man because he is hypoglycemic and when his blood sugar gets low he suffers impairments of his bodily functions such as the ability to remain conscious. This ailment kept him from realizing his dream of becoming a State Trooper but luckily for us, provides some very funny situations to react to.  Paul is also overweight and not very graceful in his evasive maneuvers but his is hilarious to watch as he clumsily tries to be “James Bond” like while battling thugs who have taken over HIS mall and also taken hostages including his love interest, Amy (Jayma Mays).

One thing Paul does exceedingly well is ride his Segway.  I got a kick  out of seeing him zig and zag on that thing! It really gave the film a little pizzaz as we watch him get around the mall with his blue light flashing and siren occasionally blaring.

It turns out that Paul Blart is the only one left in the shopping center besides the crooks and their hostages. Since his fantasy girlfriend, Amy, is a hostage, Paul decides to save her and his precious mall. So he is on his trusty Segway and the bad guys are on bikes and skateboards trying to apprehend him and this combination provides us with lots of laughs.

I thought Kevin James did a great job with his physical stunts which were so purposely inept that he kept me in stitches. He was also very likable as the mall cop who is lonely since his wife left him and now takes solace in food.

If you want to giggle for and hour and a half, Fatwayne says to give it a whirl.  One caveat, please don’t get caught with a mouthful of soda and wet the poor guy sitting in front of you as you choke with laughter!  Yeah, it’s almost that funny. By the way, it is also kid friendly.

  1. Hooray!! I’m so glad this movie is a laugh-out- loud film because that’s just what I want to do– Laugh!! As an antidote to all the bleek news. As the quote goes “Those who laugh last.” What makes Kevin James such a funny guy is that he is not afraid of looking ridiculous. He is kind of a modern day Jackie Gleason IMO.

“I don’t know what it is about this movie. Everything about it makes me smile and laugh – including the title. You go Paul Blart mall cop!!,

  2. You know, that is what the MOVIES are all about! If they don’t make us laugh, gasp and cry then they don’t fulfill their promise. I think that you will enjoy Kevin James in this film because as you said, “he is not afraid of looking ridiculous” and he does it with such aplomb which is his great talent. Remember what I said, be careful of when you take a sip of that large coke or else you may be sharing it with your neighbors! Thanks for your comments and enjoy the movie.
