Observe and Report
I must admit to having mixed emotions about this movie. I went in expecting to see a funny movie like Paul Blart: Mall Cop http://www.tvmoviequotes.com/fatwayne/paul-blart-mall-cop/ but instead I got a little bit of Blart mixed in with a whole lot of black comedy. This is really two movies in one. The first half is very funny with the typical mall cop humor. Trouble is, our cop, Ronnie Barnhardt (Seth Rogen) is a sick man who must take meds to control his bipolar disorder. He decides to end his medication and this is where the second, darker movie begins.
Ronnie is the head cop in the mall’s security force. He takes his job very seriously and is outdone when a flasher begins accosting customers. This flasher proves difficult to apprehend and this starts to get to Ronnie. To further agitate our hero, his dream girl who works at the mall is flashed the next day! Ronnie wants this case all for himself and is miffed when the local police are called in to help with the investigation. Detective Harrison (Ray Liotta) and Ronnie are like oil and water, they simply do not mix together well. If this weren’t enough, there is other crime being committed at the mall with a shoe store being robbed. All of this begins to weigh heavily on Ronnie since he considers the mall his property and continues to resent Det. Harrison’s involvement in the investigations.
There is a sub plot involving Ronnie’s attempt to become a real policeman. He really isn’t mentally qualified because of his illness but he doesn’t realize that he will not be accepted for police training. Emboldened with hopes of a bright future he decides to go off of his meds.
When his world begins to crumble around him he falls off the deep end with his coworker Dennis (Michael Pena). They spend the day at work drinking and taking drugs and brutalizing teenage skateboarders. This was not funny to me and neither was the scene when Ronnie battles about ten police officers beating them with his large flashlight. He also beats up on the boss of one of his friends, Nell, who also works at the mall. This comedy proved to be a little too black for me.
After further trials and tribulations things begin to turn around for Ronnie. He captures the flasher, solves the theft case and finally finds the true love that he so desperately needs. Ah, Hollywood – ya gotta love it!
