No Strings Attached

The title pretty much gives the premise of this movie away. Two people who have met several times in the past renew their acquaintanceship but in a rather odd way. The woman, Dr. Emma Kurtzman (Natalie Portman) informs the man, Adam Franklin (Ashton Kutcher) that it would be nice if they could be friends – sexual friends that is. She is not interested in cuddling, spooning, hand holding or any other expressions of love and togetherness. She tells Adam that she wants him for sexual enjoyment only, even if it’s at 2 A.M. Our boy Adam hardly needs to scratch his head before fully committing to Emma’s proposal.

Their arrangement is going quite nicely until they both get to know each other and inevitably begin to develop deep feelings for one another. This, of course, violates their agreement and Emma is frightened away by her feelings.  Can they give up on one another and live their lives separately? Perhaps true love will win out and they will live happily ever after.

Portman and Kutcher deserve rave reviews for their performances. They make for good chemistry on the screen and each gets to let  his/her comedic ability fly. This is a charming and really quite funny movie throughout its 1 hour 48 minutes running time. A ‘shout out’ has to go to Kevin Kline as Adam’s father Alvin Franklin. He plays a kook in the true sense of the word but he also has a penchant to become sexually involved with his son’s ex-girlfriends (much to Adam’s dismay). The supporting cast also comes through adding their comedy flair to the whole affair (Sorry!).

Be sure to stay for the closing credits as there is more of this movie to see. It was an effort for me to do so since the large Diet Coke that I had consumed was urging me on. It was worth the discomfort!
