My Life In Ruins
Do you remember Nia Vardalos from My Big Fat Greek Wedding? Well she’s back and in Greece! She’s playing an American (Georgia) who is forced into a tour guide job to survive while in Greece. She is guiding tours six days a week and finds her life mundane and boring. To further complicate things, her romantic life is non existent and she is on the prowl to get her mojo (keffi as its known in Greece) back.
We get to meet tour group B and find that it is made up of crazies from around the world, all of them stereotypes. It took me some time to warm up to most of these characters but once I did they were enjoyable. I instantly liked Irv (Richard Dreyfuss) who plays a wise cracking widower. What’s not to like about a man who, when told that just maybe he is a god, replies “I haven’t made #2 since Chicago! If I were a god, I would fix that first”! Oh, he has many other words of wisdom that he shares with the group such as these uttered when first meeting an older couple on his tour “I’m Irv Giddian and I’ve come here to see as many ancient ruins as possible and judging from your husband, the trip is already a success!” Mind you, Irv is no spring chicken himself!
Georgia begins the tour and we find that she is very knowledgeable and can educate the group whenever they stop at a point of interest. It seems however that they could care less about what she has to say and all they want to do is party and buy t-shirts. This exasperates her and drives her deeper into her funk.
The story follows the tour and shows how everyone eventually becomes more agreeable not the least of which is Georgia. The bus driver Poupi (Alexis Georgoulis) plays a pivotal role in Georgia’s reemergence and goes through somewhat of a physical transformation himself.
This being a romantic comedy, I wanted to see it end happily for everyone especially Georgia. Let me just say, in that regard, I left the theater in a good mood!
I now feel that I do not have to travel to Greece since the movie did such a splendid job of showcasing all of the beautiful sights and historical landmarks! Truth be told, I just can’t wait to get there!
