Moon
I just got back from the Moon and I had a great time! No, I am not talking about my latest vacation but rather the new sci-fi film now showing at a theater near you.
Moon is an intriguing movie that is practically a one man show. Sam Rockwell stars as Sam Bell who is a man fulfilling a three year contract to run a mining enterprise on the far side of the moon. The movie is set in the “near future” and the base is just about entirely automated. The only company Sam has is a computer named Gerty (voice of Kevin Spacey).
As he is nearing the end of his contract period, Sam is eager to return to Earth and his wife and daughter. To his dismay, he begins to “see” things or perhaps he is just hallucinating. His visions seem to be getting more frequent and soon he meets “himself”, or does he? Has three years, in all but total isolation, begun to take a toll on his sanity?
This is a well told story with believable staging and, if you can fathom it, very little violence and absolutely no explosions or alien monsters! Go figure! The film is thought provoking and although you may catch on to what is happening rather early on it doesn’t matter as the story line shifts slightly and keeps us interested.
The moonscape and lunar vehicles certainly look realistic as does the base station. The computer (Gerty) shows his “emotions” via smiley faces with smiles, frowns and even tears. He has that well worn look quite unlike HAL in the movie 2001.
If you think that you would enjoy a thought provoking tale set in an alien environment then this movie may just be you cup of tea. I am high on it and recommend it enthusiastically!
