Monsters vs Aliens
Rules are meant to be broken or so they say. I broke one of my cardinal rules and went to see an animated movie! Be banned to hell thou foul smelling demon! Well, you see it was in 3-D and I happen to be addicted to the pop out of the screen action especially when it is presented in the IMAX format. To make things even more confusing for me, it actually was a very entertaining movie. I jumped more times than when I reviewed The Haunting in Connecticut! I kept forgetting about the 3-D effects and all of a sudden I found myself ducking with the rest of the audience. They also say live and learn. So maybe I’ll become more tolerant toward animated offerings.
These monsters are pretty inane and also pretty funny. All are captive in a top secret government installation that the public knows nothing about. To quote General W. R. Monger “in 1950 it was decided that Jane and Joe Public could not handle the truth about monsters and should focus on more important things like paying income taxes. So the government convinced the world that monsters were the stuff of myths and legends and then locked them away in this here facility.”
Want to know what kind of monsters they are? I’ll attempt to tell you if you promise to forgive my spelling in case I can’t get it correct since I’ll be doing this phonetically. OK, here goes: Insectasaurus-nuclear radiation turned him from a small grub into a 350 foot tall monster. Missing Link - a 20,000 year old frozen fish man thawed out by scientist. Dr. Cockroach PH.D. – the worlds most brilliant man who invented a machine that would give humans the cockroaches ability to survive. Unfortunately, there was a side effect! B.O.B. - a genetically altered tomato who was combined with a chemically altered ranch flavored dessert topping at a snack food plant. The resultant gook gained conscientious and become an indestructible gelatinous mass. Ginormica - her entire body radiates pure energy giving her enormous strength and size. This because of a near hit from a meteor containing Quantonium! Relax parents, none of these creatures should be frightful to small children.
A maniacal alien named Gallaxhar, who has five eyes and gets around on tentacles, is after this Quantonium since it will give him vast powers to go about his evil deeds. He has an army of giant robots and clones just waiting to do his bidding. Ultimately it is up to our monster heroes to save the planet Earth.
The voice talent is impressive including the likes of Reese Witherspoon (Susan Murphy/Ginormica), Seth Rogen (B.O.B.), Hugh Laurie (Dr. Cockroach), Will Arnet (The Missing Link), Kiefer Sutherland (Gen. Monger), Stephen Colbert (Presid. Hathaway), Amy Poehler (Computer), Renee Zellweger (Katie) and several more.
The 3-D effects were sensational as was the digital IMAX and sound. I recommend this film to anyone who is young at heart!
