Max Payne
After seeing the trailer for this movie, I did not quite know what to expect. I had remembered a giant winged creature pulling a man out of a window of a high rise. It turns out that this creature is a Valkyrie who, in Norse mythology, is a minor female deity. The Valkyries’ purpose was to choose the most heroic of those who were victorious in battles and wars. They were then taken to Valhalla to serve Odin in his upcoming battles. So just what are Valkyries doing in this movie? I”m afraid that you will just have to buy a ticket to find out!
Mark Wahlberg stars as Max Payne. Max is a cop on a mission to discover who killed his wife and child and why. His journey brings him into the underworld where he faces powerful enemies and betrayal. Beau Bridges does an admirable acting job as B.B. Hensley, a former cop and Max’s mentor. Two of the female leads provide very tasty “eye candy”! Olga Kurylenko plays Natasha who is sort of wacky and probably wishes she had stayed away from Max. Mila Kunis is Mona Sax and Natasha’s sister. She is some type of an assassin who teams up with our boy Max to satisfy her own agenda.
This movie got its life from the 2001 video game of the same name. I am not familiar with the particular game but I know that it is a “shoot-em up” affair. This film has plenty of action and lots of shooting to offer and will definitely keep you awake. It is, however, much more. I found it to be a very good whodunit with several plot twists and a believable ending (yeah, if you believe in miracles!).
When I go to bed tonight I will give thanks for the fact that I do not have to lead the life of Max Payne. You know, reviewing movies for a living certainly beats fighting bad guys and dealing with Valkyries!
