Legion

Wellllllll, what the heck just happened?! That is pretty much what I asked myself after seeing Legion. There are so many questions on so many levels that you just feel like giving up trying to plug all of the holes in this plot. OK, God has become a bit miffed with mankind, who he created in his image, but who continue with their killing and other bad habits (what was he thinking?). One day he just decides that he will have his legions of angels get rid of us! What legions? I only saw two angels, Michael and Gabriel. Most of the mayhem is caused by masses of zombie-like creatures who are weak minded humans that Gabriel can easily control. Speaking of which, some of these “zomboids” could actually crawl up the wall and move across the ceiling while most others could barely keep from drooling! WHY? So the title Legion is a misnomer.

The idea that there is a vindictive God out there is a bitter pill to swallow. Also, why would he need an army of angels? And why are the angels fighting amongst each other? And why would Michael be able to go against the wishes of an omnipotent being and change his mind? It just doesn’t figure!

Anyway, we have an angel, Michael (Paul Bettany) who comes to Earth to help save mankind from the wrath of God. I didn’t quite catch his reason but he decides to chop off his wings. He turns out to be quite proficient with the use of weapons and comes to the site of the final showdown with a few duffel bags of automatic weapons and rocket launchers. This “OK Corral” turns out to be a rat hole of a diner in New Mexico populated by some forgettable people. The importance of the place is that this is where Charlie (Adrianne Palicki) lives. She is eight months pregnant with a child who is supposed to be the salvation of mankind but first he must be born. When the little bastard (Charlie doesn’t know who the father is) does make his entrance into the world he has a major problem since the angel Gabriel is here to kill him along with the rest of us. Unanswered is just why this child is so special.

Charles S. Dutton, Dennis Quaid, Lucas Black, Willa Holland and Tyrese Gibson round out the cast. The rest aren’t worth mentioning. Character development? There isn’t any of real substance which leaves us with action. The action sequences were pretty good but as mentioned it’s just a lot of zombie killing which we have seen many times before. One clever device was that of the archangel Gabriel’s (Kevin Durand) wings which he uses as both a weapon and shield. When he spins around bullets just bounce off of him!

Positively do not attend this movie with the intention of substituting it as a religious experience so that you do not have to go to church on Sunday!! Additionally do not see it with the hopes of being intellectually stimulated. The only way you should view this film is if you can suspend your disbelief. But beware, even that may not save you from the Lord’s just anger!

One Response to “Legion”

  1. Well, throughout the Bible God changes his mind all the time such as in the story of Jonah. God was about to destroy the city of Ninevah, but later realized that He love the people too much to do so.
And angels do disobey God (Satan).
As for the reason, in the movie Michael states that it was because of Jeep, his staunch unmoving faith inspired Michael to disobey the order.

The symbolism in the story is very great. the child being born has nothing to do with prophecy, it has to do with the fact that Michael knew God well enough that he could overturn God’s decision, just as Jeep had changed his.

Charlie, the pregnant woman does not care at all about the ‘bastard’ child of hers. She even smokes. And clearly states that she “hates” the her unborn child. (Similar God’s situation in this movie, hating His creation). When the child is born, the world is not safe. Michael says, you must raise this child to be a good man. In other words, love this child because it is your responsibility. (Similar to God having to be responsible).

At the end when Gabriel is about to kill Charlie and her child at the top of the mountain, Gabriel demands Charlie to hand over the child (whom she did not love) to him. She says “No.” Because she was starting to feel some affection towards it.

When the all powerful, all seeing, all loving God sees this action of Charlie he realizes that if this woman who created this child whom she hated from the beginning is willing to die for her child and love it, should not I, the all loving God love my creation so much more than this woman loves her bastard child?

God decides to cancel the extermination, and revives Michael, ordering him to stop Gabriel.
That is why Michael says, “I gave Him what He needed.” to Gabriel.

    Very deep movie.
