Leap Year

Amy Adams is quite fetching in this movie as she stars as Anna. Anna is an apartment stager who lives is Boston. She takes properties that are for sale and arranges them to look inviting to prospective buyers by adding furniture and other touches to make them appealing. She has a boyfriend, Jeremy, who is played by Adam Scott. Jeremy is a heart doctor with a busy schedule who does not seem too interested in furthering his relationship with Anna. She, on the other hand, would love to be engaged to Jeremy but is starting to loose patience. Work takes Jeremy to Dublin, Ireland for a conference. Anna’s father (John Lithgow) tells her of an old Irish legend that allows a woman to propose to a man on leap year day (Feb. 29th) and according to legend, he can not refuse. Anna hatches the idea to surprise Jeremy in Ireland and propose to him.

On the flight to Ireland Anna’s plane is diverted because of bad weather and is forced to land in Cardiff, Wales. Since she is on a time schedule, Anna is desperate to get to Dublin but there are no flights to be had. She rents a boat to take her to Cork but the boat runs aground on the Dingle Peninsula. Here she meets an innkeeper named Declan (Matthew Goode) who she persuades to taxi her to Dublin.

During their wacky trip in Delcan’s wreck of a car, they start to get over their differences and begin to develop feelings for each other. As you can imagine, this is not such a good thing considering Anna is on her way to propose to Jeremy. The situations that present themselves as obstacles to the traveling couple prove to be quite humorous ranging from the loss of their car to Anna stepping in cow dung while wearing her very expensive shoes. She also manages to have her Louis Vuitton luggage bag stolen by hooligans and is forced to pose, along with Declan, as a married woman in order to stay at the town’s only inn.

Eventually they arrive in Dublin and you can see that they both want to say something to each other but the situation prevents them from doing so. Jeremy reenters the picture and, in front of Declan, proposes to Anna. Declan can no longer bear to watch and so he departs. Anna looks for him and seeing that he has left, accepts the proposal. So it looks like Anna’s dream has come true – or has it?

What circumstances lie ahead that may or may not cause Anna and Declan to reunite or will she and Jeremy live happily ever after? I could tell you but then you would just call me that “S” word (spoiler!). This movie is a bit of fluff but it is enjoyable and the Irish country is simply gorgeous. In fact, I think that I will put it on my list of “places to see.” I am, after all, of Irish decent.
