Just Go With It

Once in a while I like to sit back and enjoy a good romantic comedy, especially if the lead actors are funny, believable and enduring. If you would like to do this also then I have great news for you. The news is that Just Go With It delivers on all three fronts. Have you noticed that Adam Sandler is becoming more proficient in his roles of late? I am starting to become a huge fan of his movies. It doesn’t hurt that his leading ladies this time out happen to be Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman and Brooklyn Decker.

On his wedding day twenty years ago, Danny Maccabee (Adam Sandler) overhears his wife to-be disparaging him, his family and hinting to her bridesmaids that she couldn’t remain with one man for long. Of course the wedding didn’t happen. Skip ahead to the present day and we find Danny to be a successful plastic surgeon who now has an acceptable nose instead of the “eagle beak” he was blessed with at birth. Danny is having quite an active sex life since he stumbled upon a gimmick that works wonders for him. He tells women that he is unhappily married and beset upon by his horrid spouse. The clinker is that he wears the original wedding ring that he didn’t use two decades earlier. The girls seem to feel safe with him and a little sorry for what he is going through.

Jennifer Aniston comes into play as Danny’s office manager, Katherine Murphy. She is a divorced mother of two and is fully aware of her boss’s scheme. All is going according to Danny’s plan until he meets a young and beautiful woman, Palmer Dodge (Brooklyn Decker). The trouble is that he puts the ring in his pocket and the next morning she discovers it after their night of bliss. She becomes furious (having thought he was single)  that he tricked her and refuses to see him again.

Ordinarily this would not be of concern for the Doc since there are plenty of fish in the pond. The problem is that he is convinced that Palmer is the one for him. He has fallen hard! In desperation he enlists the help of his office manager, Katherine. He devises a plan where he tells Palmer that he is soon to be divorced and thus will soon be free from his tormenting wife. Palmer calls his bluff and agrees to see him again if she can meet his wife and determine that Danny’s story is legit.

The meeting goes fairly well until Katherine gets a phone call from her kids and forgets where she is. This further complicates Danny’s scheme since he now has to pretend to be a father. Naturally Palmer wants to meet his kids and the conniving kiddos wrangle a trip to Hawaii out of Danny for their trouble. I think that you can perceive the potential for problems to develop in this storyline.  Imagine all of the complications that will arise as Danny strives to keep his lie viable. Besides the devious kids there is Danny’s cousin Eddie Sims aka “Dolph Lundgren” (Nick Swardson) and Katherine’s old college nemesis Devlin “the turd” Adams (Nicole Kidman) who all lend their share of chaos to the scam.

All in all, things work  out well for all concerned. What you will love about this movie is the fact that it is very funny. We are provided with loads of one liners and hilarious situations to keep us entertained. They seemed to follow one after another in rapid succession. If you want to spend some time getting away from it all – give this flick a try.
