Iron Man 2

If you liked Iron Man you’ll undoubtedly love Iron Man 2. Lots more of the same and also lots of new stuff to enjoy. What made it even better for me was the inclusion of Mickey Rourke as a gold toothed, tattooed villain replete with a pet cockatoo. He too has an arc reactor weapon that looks like lightening whips. He gives Iron Man Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) just about all that he can handle.

There are politics with an especially annoying Senator named Stern played by an almost unrecognizable Garry Shandling. Lay off the Twinkies, Garry!  There’s danger in the person of Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell) as a n’er-do-well arms dealer who is out to get Tony Stark. Another nemesis is the aforementioned Mickey Rourke as Ivan Vanko who is out to avenge his father who was wronged by the elder Mr. Stark. And, of course, there is pulchritude aplenty thanks to Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and Scarlett Johansson as Natalie Rushman/Natasha Romanoff. And what would an Iron Man movie be without all of the fighting and gimmicks? You will not be disappointed in this department.

In this version, everyone knows who Iron Man is and Tony Stark is eating up all of his new fame. The U.S. Government wants his technology but he is not about to relent and turn his “property” over to them. Meanwhile, a crazy Russian, Ivan Vanko, is studying his father’s notes and is about to create his own arc reactor. Vanko might be crazy but he is also a genius and he hates the Stark family because of what Tony’s father did to his father, Soviet physicist Anton Vanko, which was to cheat him out of his part of the company and doom him to poverty.  And if Tony doesn’t have enough problems already, it seems that the palladium from his arc reactor is poisoning him and he is having trouble finding a way out of his medical dilemma. There are many other subplots but I am sure that you get the idea.

This is a big picture with lots of special effects and gizmos to keep us entertained. It is also well acted and fast paced. If you like it I have some good news for you. You can look forward to Iron Man 3 starring Robert Downey, Jr. to be in theaters in 2013!
