Hot Tub Time Machine

A funny but crude movie that features human excrement on just about everybody and everything with the exception of the hot tub (thank goodness!). Three buddies and a nephew decide to go back to the scene of the buddies’ most memorable weekend which occurred in 1986 at the Kodiak Valley ski resort. The year is now 2010 and when they get to the resort they discover that it is suffering from hard economic times. They are still determined to have a grand time and wind up in a hot tub. They consume copious amounts of alcohol of all types including a mysterious Russian energy drink which is accidentally spilled into the inner workings of this mystifying hot tub. Somehow they are transported back to that magical weekend in 1986 where they were all on top of their game (at least in their minds).

Our friends have not done so well as adults in the modern day and are all unhappy with their lot in life. Adam (John Cusack) can not keep a relationship going and has just been dumped by yet another woman. Nick Webber (Craig Robinson) is married to a demanding and unfaithful wife who also controls his every move. Lou (Rob Corddry) is a wacky party guy who is now lonely and can no longer find the party. Jacob (Clark Duke) is Adam’s young and unappreciated nephew. He is living in the basement of Adam’s house and Adam takes him along on the trip.

Back to 1986, our boys wake up looking as they did back then with the exception of Jacob who wasn’t even born then. At first they are afraid to do anything differently in fear that they might not be able to get back to their proper time. Ultimately it dawns on them that perhaps they can change their lives by changing their actions now, thus getting a second chance at life. And so the guys go about their weekend partying and carousing and generally having a good old time. We, as the audience, do too! There are some genuinely funny moments to be enjoyed and all in all, it is a good movie.

Once again I was disappointed that the writers chose to litter the dialog with the “F” word which must have been muttered at least 100 times. Enough already! It is time to get creative and use language that complements the situation.
