Get Low

When I first heard the title of this movie I thought it referred to being buried given the subject matter of the film. According to Felix Bush (Robert Duvall) it means “let’s get down to business.” The business he is referring to is his own funeral which he would like to take place while he is alive rather than the other way around.

Felix Bush is a hermit who lives in self imposed exile deep in the woods. He appears in the nearby town only when he is in need of something. As a result of his scruffy appearance and the rumors surrounding him, the townsfolk shun him mostly out of fear. Felix decides to go to town in order to discuss the possibility of having a funeral service while he is still alive. He reasons that he would like to know what folks are saying about him behind his back and, in general, how he is truly regarded. His visit brings him to the office of the funeral director Frank Quinn (Bill Murray) who is having a hard time staying in business since “people are dying everywhere, except here.”  Although Felix’s request is most unusual, Frank sees an opportunity to make a few dollars. His employee, Buddy Robinson (Lucas Black) initially resists the idea but eventually gets on board with the idea as things progress.

There is mystery in Felix Bush’s long ago past and he is anxious to come clean and confess his wrongdoing. Faced with a ceremony that would be largely unattended, he and Frank concoct a plan to auction off Bush’s house and property (with the winner taking possession upon his actual death) for $5 a chance. Everyone is invited to the funeral for free with the only obligation being to tell a story about Bush.

This is a beautifully filmed period piece. The costumes and old cars were eye-catching. The plot was convincing and enjoyable but the movie positively glowed with the presence of Duvall on the screen. He is totally mesmerizing in every scene he appears in. Even when he isn’t talking he is spellbinding to watch and listen to his “grunts.” There is little doubt that he will once again be in consideration for an Oscar – and rightfully so!
