Blindness

In most movies and TV shows we are told to “go into the light.” That would be a huge mistake in this movie. You see, the light is what happens to you when you are affected by the virus in question. It causes a type of blindness that is not the complete lack of light but rather a total white out in which vision is not possible.

Imagine a city where everyone is sightless and all civilization breaks down. At first the government tries quarantining those affected. Eventually this fails as the virus continues to spread. However for a good part of this film we are forced to witness people subjected to subhuman conditions and a complete breakdown of civility as the thugs take over the quarantine facility and withhold food for money, jewelry and even women who are treated as currency.

If you want to take a walk into the black hole of humanity, this is the film for you. I know, I know, light does not escape a black hole. There were times that I felt like I was entering the void since there are numerous scenes where the screen is black but more often it was the other way around with a blinding solid white screen. This proved to be very annoying to me.

Julianne Moore plays the only sighted person in this dreary effort and is also the one redeeming virtue that should cause you to spend your hard earned money on ticket. After viewing all of the filth caused by these sightless people with no cleaning supplies, I was more than ready to take a shower as soon as I got home!
